QEEG Brainmapping services

Neurofeedback, qEEG Brain map, Brain Imaging

Quantitative Electroencephalography

Quantitative Electroencephalography (qEEG) is an assessment in which the electrical activity of the brain (EEG) is simultaneously recorded from 19 locations on the scalp. The EEG activity is being analyzed and is compared to normative values with “normative”. The processed EEG is commonly converted into color maps of different brain functioning, for example, activity of a single location, coherence (communication between two brain locations), or asymmetry. These analysis allows to identify abnormalities on specific brain structures on specific brain activities.

How is the qEEG Brain Map Performed?

Many people are familiar with how an EKG, Electrocardiogram, works for measuring if their heart is working properly. A qEEG works in a similar manner. However, qEEG measures your brain performance. Sensors are positioned across all areas of your brain and readings of your brain signals are taken in real-time. A qEEG Brain Map provides a snapshot of your brain functioning pattern. This is indicative of how your brain is operating most of the time. This information is useful in determining the brain pattern that is associated with your outward behaviors or symptoms.

The process starts with a 19-channel recording of the EEG in an Eyes Open and Eyes Closed condition. If the patient is able to minimize artifact for a prolonged period of time, a Cognitive Task condition recording may also be performed. The analysis begins with a visual inspection of the EEG across a wide variety of montages. This is followed by a Fast Fourier Transform Spectral Analysis to determine maximal peaks across 0-32 Hz activity.

Does qEEG Brain Mapping Do Anything to My Brain?

No, the brain mapping session only reads information about how your brain is performing. The process only involves you sitting quietly while the computer takes its reading. Nothing is put into your system and nothing is done to you. It is completely non-invasive.

How should I prepare for the test?

For the days preceding your scheduled test, you should keep in mind the preparations listed below:

  • Do not drink caffeinated beverages the day of the test
  • Do not drink alcoholic beverages for 2 days before the test
  • Make sure your hair and scalp are completely dry prior to the exam
  • Shampoo your hair, but do not use conditioner
  • Do not apply hair products (e.g., hair spray, gel, mousse)
  • Remove all hair accessories (e.g., extensions, hair pieces, bobby pins, hair ties, earrings, etc.)
  • Do not work out or jog immediately before the test (light activity is okay)
  • Do not stay up late the night before the test
